RM Magazine interview Nicola Roberts
Here’s a recent interview Nicola has done with RM Magazine.
She talks about her solo work – having her own journey on a CD, her ‘dream‘ collaboration list for album #2 (M.I.A, Kate Bush, Missy Elliot!), a future fashion collection, celebrating Girls Aloud’s 10 year anniversary and her love for new up and coming designers.
“Watching The X Factor brings back memories from Popstars: The Rivals”
NICOLA Roberts admits she will find it difficult to watch tonight’s X Factor results show as yet another of the acts gets voted off.
The experience of being on the stage in front of millions of viewers and the judges is one that she went through on one of the earliest music talent shows, 2002’s Popstars: The Rivals.
And the latest of Simon Cowell’s TV singing contests brings the memories flooding back.
So much so that when Nicola sees the contestants squirm, she feels for them every inch of the way.
Nicola, 26, said: “Every time I watch X Factor, especially the audition process, I can feel the nerves.
“I feel sick just like I did when I was taking part in Popstars: The Rivals.
“The feeling comes back because I identify with these people who love to sing and want to be surrounded by music and to be successful. Watching the show reminds me of how that feels and it is all too familiar.”
Tipping both Misha B and Little Mix as the most talented of the surviving finalists, Nicola added: “I actually love Little Mix. They are really fun and nice to watch.
“I met them the other night and they are really genuinely close in their support of each other.
“I think they are going to have a really good work ethic. If you have that understanding of each other you are prepared to work hard.
“Determination can’t be overlooked. They are really lovely girls.
“Misha B is really talented. Her understanding of music and her dedication to it is apparent.
“It is very clear to see. But just as much as it is a talent competition, it’s a popularity contest as well.”
Next up for Nicola is new single, Yo-Yo in January. Taken from her recent Top 20 album Cinderella Eyes, it follows hit singles Beat Of My Drum and Lucky Day.
“It feels like ages ago that I released the first single from the album. I feel like this year has been a blur,” she said.
“It’s strange because I spent so long making the album in the studio and submerged myself into that way of life.
“I had to put it out there and, at times, it felt like I would never see that day. I got so used to seeing the songs as demos or on my laptop.
“It was amazing, after 18 months of hard work, to have that little CD.”
Nicola Roberts: ‘I’m adjusting to performing without Girls Aloud’
Nicola Roberts has said that she is still adjusting to performing as a solo artist.
The 26-year-old launched her solo career earlier this year with the release of her album Cinderella’s Eyes.
Speaking at an intimate gig for Carphone Warehouse last night, Roberts said that she still gets nervous singing without her four bandmates, but admitted that she would like to tour.
“I mean if the opportunity was there, I’d love to – I’d definitely love to,” she said. “I do get nervous, I’m not going to lie. I get a lot more nervous on my own than when I was with the band. I am adjusting to it – but it’s very different.
“Sort of being in the studio, writing, recording is also very different to being on your own having to perform the song. It’s two totally different elements. Someone said something really interesting to me the other day; what happens to me, because I wrote it, is that I have a tendency to go into myself and it’s like self-indulgent. But I’m not recording it, I’m performing it – I have to learn to do that just as well.”
Despite the album peaking at number 17 in the UK charts, Roberts admitted that she does view chart success as being equally important as the “unexpected” positive reviews her collection achieved.
“I do follow the charts. I appreciate that I’ve made a record that’s not necessarily what’s in the charts, and I wanted to do that – that’s the record that I wanted to make,” she explained. “I wanted to be able to look back on it and not doing something for any other reason, other than that it was the record that I wanted to make.
“I’ve been given an opportunity to write, and to be in control of it 100%. That is amazing. That’s been the most amazing part and I have that forever – whether or not I make a second record, whatever happens, I have something which I am genuinely proud of.”
Roberts releases third single ‘Yo-Yo’ early next year.
Just came across this unusual interview its very morbid and dark, not sure Nicola was comfortable in answering these questions, I know i wouldnt be!
Where would you like to wake up?
I suppose with my family and friends around me. I couldn’t really say anything other.
What would you like to achieve on your last day?
Jesus Christ! I’d like to record a song with Kanye West and I’d like it to be the song of the century.
How would you spend the afternoon?
Probably doing really boring family things like watching old movies with the family and a big box of tissues just waiting for the clock to go ‘ding…that’s the end of the world’.
Who would be at your final dinner?
It’d be all of the girls, all of my friends and family and then…we could have Kanye there, we could have Elton John. Adele would be there. I could just sit back and watch the sparks fly.
What’s going to be on the menu?
A big roast dinner with extra roasties.
What would be your biggest regret?
I can’t tell you (gasps). It’s a secret!
What is the last song you want to hear?
That’s so hard, there’s too many. Something by Annie Lennox maybe. ‘Walking On Broken Glass’.
What would your deathbed confession be?
I’d have to kill you (laughs). I’m not joking, that I’d have to kill you for. Goodness me…I couldn’t say it out loud.
How would you like to die?
In my sleep I think. Nice and peacefully.
What would your final words be?
I can’t really be humorous about this whole situation because I really don’t like the whole idea, even of getting older. Getting closer to death scares me so I can’t be all jokey jokey about this whole thing. It just doesn’t sit well with me. But it would be something really typical, like ‘I love you’ to all of my family.
What would you have written on your gravestone?
“She tried…”
Who would you like to meet at the Pearly Gates of Heaven?
An angel, rather than a devil. I just hope I make it there.
Describe your vision of Heaven?
An easy breezy floaty place, where you could go back to every situation in your life. You could go back to a special birthday, or your wedding day, or the day your brother was born.
If you could be resurrected the next day who/what would you come back as?
Myself. Or Beyonce. She’s the ultimate woman, so inspirational, her talent is just beyond…and she seems like a lovely person.
Quite possibly our favourite girl band member ever, Nicola Roberts is finally going it alone after nearly a decade in the shared Girls Aloud tinged spotlight. In anticipation of her debut solo album, she tells Jamie Milton a few of her first and lasts.
Album purchased? First: A Take That record. I think I was about 10 or 11 – around the time of ‘Pray’ and ‘Babe’. Last: ‘Watch The Throne’ by Jay Z and Kanye West. They’re just both geniuses. I just love them both, so the fact that you get two for one is a bonus!
Song you knew all the words to? First: I think it was Alanis Morissette, ‘Ironic’. I used to love her growing up and my Mum would always have her playing in the car and we’d all be singing along. Last: I’ve got Beyoncé’s record [‘4’] on literally non-stop in the car at the moment. I almost know the entire album off by heart. It pisses me off when I miss a word out, because I’m so into it.
Film seen in cinema? First: ‘Apollo 13’ – I remember all the family going; my Mum, Dad, Aunties and Uncles. I remember it being a big day out, the first time I’d been to a cinema and I remember it being a massive deal. Last: I went and saw ‘The Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes’. The trailer makes it to be a lot more dramatic than it is, CGI-wise you’d expect there to be flying gorillas and there are a couple of scenes like that but it’s more about the story.
Show you went to? First: Again, this was a first experience with Take That. Last: Probably M.I.A last November while ‘XXXO’ and all that was going on – it was good.
Fan encounter? First: With the Popstars The Rivals show, we all came into the same studio every weekend and I used to go and stand outside and literally, from the moment we went and did the first live show, there’d be fans there, so it started very early for me. Last: We have a little club – I call all the fans ‘Team Ginge’, like we’re all on the same team. There’s a few that are absolutely everywhere. Although where I am at the moment in my solo career, where I’m only at the second single, I haven’t seen them for a few weeks now and I miss them. When
they’re there all the time, you really get to know them – they’re like little friends.
Time abroad? First: I think I was 10, and the whole family – and I’m talking about the whole family – we went out to Mallorca for a week. It was amazing. Last: I haven’t been on a proper holiday since 2009. Recently I’ve been over to shoot the video [for ‘Lucky Day’] in L.A and New York. I think if you’re in work mode and you’re motivated, you don’t wanna stop to take a holiday. But it’s nice when your work responsibilities take you away and you have a lovely team around you and it’s a mix between ‘trip’ and ‘work’.
Book? First: Roald Dahl’s ‘The Twits’. Last:I’m reading Alan Sugar’s book at the moment. I’m only at the very beginning but I like business, so I’m partly using this as something to learn from.
Nicola Roberts’ new album ‘Cinderella’s Eyes’ is out now via Polydor.
Taken from the Autumn 2011 issue of DIY, available now.
Girls Aloud have achieved huge success in the U.K., outselling every other girl group in history, but they remain a virtual mystery in the U.S., where only a few vagrant hits have strayed onto chancier dance floors. Then there’s Nicola Roberts, the ice-skinned and flame-haired Aloud member: known simultaneously as the most polarizing and mystifying fifth of the group, she’s become this decade’s ultimate British cult pop star (in a nation that prides itself on producing oddball glamor). Upon their hiatus in 2009, figurehead Cheryl Cole went onto to become an X Factor judge, boilerplate solo pop queen and national tabloid treasure. Meanwhile, Roberts kept a low profile, working on what would become her just-released debut solo record, Cinderella’s Eyes.
Produced by avant-pop heavy hitters like Joseph Mount of Metronomy, Diplo, Dimitri Tikovoi, Dragonette, it’s a maverick commercial pop release in line with Roberts’ work in Girls Aloud. A Top 20 success on the U.K. charts, Cinderella’s Eyes is also well-reviewed by critics stateside. Like Roisin Murphy and Robyn before her, she seems destined to become one of international pop’s dark horses.
Outside of music, she’s also thriving. Her striking physical appearance — which once made her a target of playground hecklers and media abuse — is now hailed by the fashion community as inspiring, her arctic doll-like appearance setting her apart from the tanned and blonde Stepford wives of pop. Fortunately, Roberts’ own confidence with her looks has grown, too; she’s creeping onto fashion icon turf, with designers chasing her down and her Cinderella’s Eyes artwork displaying her as queen of her own hyperstylized fantasia. Rolling Stone talked with Roberts in London.
What were your priorities in making a solo record?
I didn’t want to be swamped down with the so-called dos and don’ts of how to make a pop record. I wanted everything to come through what I felt or what I wanted to create. Electro, as a style, can really give you that. Coming from working with [Aloud producers] Xenomania, I got used to the idea of breaking pop rules, so I continued with that in my solo experience. There are some vocal surprises on this record; not for me, but maybe for my listeners who never heard my full range before. There are some crazy falsettos on there; the vocals are erratic, which I wanted. It mirrors the emotion I felt when singing it; I let it go there. This record is about that: giving in, letting go, pushing things to the edge.
How did you choose your collaborators?
I wanted to make a unique record, and I knew who to choose based on the sounds they could give me. That came from listening to plenty of music on my own. The dramatic, intense electro sounds came from Joseph of Metronomy; I’d been a massive fan of his work and he liked the Aloud, and I knew he was more than capable of imagining and creating a record with me. For what eventually became my first single, “Beat of My Drum,” I could already hear it forming in my head — I could hear the sounds play out, I just couldn’t relay them. Being a fan of M.I.A. and Major Lazer’s “Pon De Floor,” I turned to Diplo and he made it a reality.
You shot your first two videos for “Beat of My Drum” and “Lucky Day” in New York and LA. What did you take away from the experience?
I hadn’t been to New York before. I find Americans to be a lot more open as people. They smile, they genuinely seem like they want to help you if you need something; they’re warm people. In London, it’s so busy, busy; I feel everyone is on their own track, and just trying to get to where they need to be. Apart from the hot weather, the American experience was great for me!
NICOLA Roberts admits she fell ill with the stress of making her debut album.
The self-confessed “perfectionist” spent 18 months painstakingly plugging away at Cinderella’s Eyes because she refused to settle for anything less than the best.
Finally, she succumbed to a nasty cold after several sleepless and frustrating nights working with producer Dimitri Tikovi on first single Beat Of My Drum.
The Girls Aloud star – who performed new tunes Lucky Day and Sticks + Stones at her Biz Session – said: “We literally had about five days until the deadline of whether it was gonna be first single or not and I couldn’t get the production right.
“I could hear it in my head but I couldn’t do it. Me and Dimitri were in the studio and we were making ourselves ill – we might as well just have slept there.
“We were searching for this sound and we tried everything. We were putting these voices down and then f****** them up with the effects, and then playing some hooks and then f****** them up.
“It just wouldn’t work. It got to the point where I came down with a cold and I was like, ‘I’m making myself ill.’ I’ve never felt stress like the stress I felt making this record.
“Then I said, ‘I know who can do this. I really want Diplo to come on board.’
“As soon as I explained to Diplo what I wanted, he just got it straight away. It came back the way I wanted it to be and the way I heard it in my head.”
The hands-on singer also revealed she locked horns with her producers whenever they altered the sound of a track without her permission.
