Girls Aloud: Cheers, Tears and Ten Years

Nicola Roberts speaks about the girl group’s decade-long tenure, regrouping after their various solo projects and plans for the future – and how getting older has made them more comfortable.

Ten years is a long time in the world of pop. Ten years ago, Justin Bieber and Harry Styles had both just turned nine years of age, their dreams of global superstardom yet to be realised; Rihanna was still in high school in Barbados; 13-year-old Taylor Swift was taking her first steps into the music business, all notions of musical pot-shots at her ex-boyfriends far from her adolescent mind.

Nicola Roberts is well aware that a decade is a long time, especially when you’ve lived it in the public eye – but, as she says herself, it’s not like she or her bandmates knew any different. When Girls Aloud were formed on Popstars: The Rivals in late 2002 – Roberts, the youngest member, was 17 and straight out of school. A pop career with longevity was a nice idea, sure – but who remembers their male counterparts One True Voice?

“I do remember those days fondly, but it does seem like we’re looking at different people,” says the Scouse singer affectionately nicknamed “Ginge” by her bandmates. “In rehearsals, we’ve been looking on YouTube to try and remember our original routines for the show, because over the years, they’ve chopped and changed. It’s crazy looking at Top of the Pops from eight years ago, and looking at who we were as people and how young we were. Looking at us, and thinking ‘God, we had no idea what was to come’.”

Since they’ve hit the milestone that many of their one-time peers failed to reach, a 10-year anniversary tour was a no-brainer. “Maybe it’s because we’re women, and we’re quite sentimental,” she says of the decision to reconvene after a three-year hiatus.

There was a period, however, when it looked like the group would not be coming back together. Four of the five (Roberts, Cheryl Cole, Nadine Coyle and Kimberley Walsh) have pursued solo singing careers, while Walsh and Sarah Harding have both done acting and presenting work. But tabloid rumours about in-fighting didn’t help to quell the notion of a rift between the five.

“It’s not like that at all,” she protests. “We’ve known each other for 10 years, and I think people forget that, just because you haven’t seen us working as a group for three years, it doesn’t mean that we haven’t all been sat around Kimberley’s living room watching I’m a Celebrity… or it doesn’t mean that we haven’t been shopping together, or whatever.

“We constantly see each other all the time, outside of work commitments. I mean, I do understand why people come to that conclusion because you haven’t seen us as a band for a few years – but behind everything else, we’re always in contact. The band dynamic has never changed over the last 10 years. There was never any rift.”

Nicola’s body turned into living canvas for Dulux Colour of the Year 2013

dulux colour of the year 2013

Girls Aloud star Nicola Roberts has brought new meaning to ‘January Blues’ by being transformed into a canvas of ‘Indigo Night’ to announce 2013′s Colour of the Year – as predicted by a global panel of experts from leading paint brand, Dulux.

Captured in a series of mono-chromatic images, which showcase the singer as she has never been before, Dulux colour ambassador and style mentor Nicola’s signature porcelain skin and flame red hair contrast boldly with a custom set, styling and make-up compilation which are all entirely Indigo. Achieved by a production team of 10 and a 12-hour shoot, almost every inch of the star’s body features air-brush make-up application through costume lace to create a unique body art effect.

Here’s what she said about her design:

“I’ve seen first hand the work that BBC Children in Need do and why the public’s money is so important. Recently I visited a fashion project supporting young women in Hackney. My bear reflects my own sense of style and I think it’s the first time Pudsey has ever had hair! I hope people will bid on our collection and help BBC Children in Need continue their great work.”

The auction ends at 28 Dec, 2012 23:09:00 GMT so as of now you have 9 days and 6 hours to bid.

Listen to new Little Mix track co-written by Nicola Roberts

Little Mix have premiered a new track called Going Nowhere which features them beatboxing and rapping!

Taken from their debut album, the track was co-written by Iain James, Fred Ball and Nicola Roberts.

It’s about the realisation that a relationship is going nowhere as the boyfriend isn’t making an effort anymore.

They hit the chorus with the lyrics: ‘Leave, you’re not the boy you said you’d be. And it’s so hard for me to breath.

‘How can I love you boy if you’re going nowhere? We’re going nowhere.’

Nicola Roberts opens new facility for Alder Hey

nicola roberts alder heySinger Nicola Roberts officially opened Alder Hey Hospital’s brand new mental health facility. The Girl’s Aloud singer visited the new facility, Alder Park, where she met patients, families and staff at the Unit before the official opening.

Nicola spent time learning about the Unit from patients and families, before taking a tour to view the facilities on offer. She then officially opened Alder Park by unveiling a special picture, created by patient Jacob Scott especially for the occasion.

Located in the Waterloo area of Liverpool, Alder Hey purchased the large purpose built facility as the old site at the hospital in West Derby became unfit for purpose. The new designated facility offers more therapeutic and recreational space, while its close proximity to a beach and local park provides outdoor activities for patients and families to enjoy.

Nicola said: “I am delighted to open this new Dewi Jones Unit in Alder Park today. The patients have told me how excited they are to have a brand new unit right next to the beach. Jacob’s picture for the opening is amazing and I’m honoured that the patients have asked me to open it for them. It was lovely to meet them and their families.”

As one of only seven dedicated children’s units in the country, Alder Park’s catchment area includes Merseyside, Cheshire and the Wirral but it also accepts referrals from the Isle of Man and North Wales. The Unit looks after around 50 young people every year with a wide range of conditions such as depression, anxiety, obsessive compulsive disorder, psychosis, eating disorders and ADHD.

nicola roberts alder heyAs an Investing in Children hospital, Alder Hey is keen to involve patients in developing its services. Young people and their families were taken to view the site and consider ideas for redevelopment. They were also consulted on the layout and design of the facility, including the use of space, colour scheme, decor, bedroom fittings, furniture, equipment and outdoor space. Since moving, they continue to discuss ideas for their new facility, including different use of space.

Andrea O’Donnell, Nurse Consultant at Alder Park explains: “We care for children and young people up to 14 years old who have a wide range of complex difficulties.   Along with providing second opinions, consultations and assessment for our outpatients, we have nine beds on the Unit for our inpatients. Many of these children and young people stay with us for three months or more so this facility needs to be right for them. It was really important to us that our patients and families were involved in designing and planning the new facility.”

The team at Alder Park includes nursing and support staff, psychologists, medical and family therapists. Their extensive knowledge and experience allows them to offer many different types of intervention, including medication, cognitive behaviour therapy, family therapy, parenting interventions, neuro cognitive assessments and psychodynamic psychotherapy. Group therapy and therapeutic activities are also available while the facility has access to the hospital’s Play Service and Arts for Health programme.

Sue Brown, General Manager for District Services at Alder Hey said: “We are delighted that Nicola could join us in celebrating such a special day for our patients and families, especially as she is a real favourite with our children. On behalf of everyone at our new Alder Park, I wish to take this opportunity to sincerely thank Nicola for coming today to open our new home and express her support for the Unit.”

Nicola Roberts co-wrote song on new Little Mix album

Little Mix have praised Nicola Roberts in a recent interview, after working with her on DNA album track, Going Nowhere.

Perrie said: “We are really lucky to have such amazing girlbands on the album. We’ve worked with Nicola Roberts on Going Nowhere and she’s lovely.”

Jade agreed: “She’s very talented and working with her was really relaxing. She gave us advice about being in a girlband. We would love to work with her again.”

Jesy continued: “She’s got a very similar taste in music to us so it was really easy to work with her. She wrote one of our favourite songs.”

Speaking of Going Nowhere, Leigh-Anne revealed: “It’s like an R&B song, it’s cool. It’s got a rap on it and it’s almost going back to how we first started out with rapping and the beat-boxing. It was just very raw and it’s like we have sat in a room and just started jamming like we used to do. I think that’s why we like it so much. It reminds us of back in the day.”

The girls also said its a huge compliment to be compared to Girls Aloud as they look up to them.

Little Mix’s new single DNA is out on 11th November.
