Nicola Maria Roberts was born on the 5th October 1985, Stamford, Lincolnshire.
Nicola started singing at the young age of eleven. Frequently singing at her relatives parties she would win awards and was spurred on by a local mobile DJ. In 2002, at the age of 16, whilst on holiday in the UK with her family, she went on to audition for a reality TV show looking for 5 boys, and 5 girls, to go head to head in a chart battle which would see one band get the much wanted Christmas number 1, with the other having to be branded the “losers”. Whilst on holiday Nicola, and her father, drove down to one of the various auditions for ‘Popstars’ back in 2002, where she went on to sing Sharika’s smash hit single, Underneath Your Clothes. Whilst waiting to audition, Nicola, also spotted various members of the future band, Girls Aloud, including Kimberley Walsh, who included branded as ‘gorgeous’.
Nicola went on to each stage of the competition, where she sadly lost her place in the competition when she made the final 15, who were soon to be cut down to 10. In her autobiography, Dreams That Glitters, Nicola revealed how she knew she was going to get kicked out because producers labelled her as ‘a good voice, but quiet personality’, with Nicola knowing this information, she knew that the producers would pick someone like Sarah Harding over herself, even though Nicola (and the viewers) knew that Nicola had some of the strongest vocals in the competition. However, luck seemed to come Nicola’s way when one of the contestants quit the show before the live shows due to personal reasons, which saw Nicola Roberts be picked to join the final 10, and be in with the chance in being part of Britain’s next biggest girlband.
Week by week Nicola sung her heart out nation, singing tracks from, I’m So Excited, Shout, aswell as other pop classics. Eventually Nicola made it to the grand final, where she won her place in the new girl band, recieving the 2nd highest amount of public votes. She joined Cheryl Tweedy (now Cole), Nadine Coyle, Kimberley Walsh and Sarah Harding to become Girls Aloud. The band went on to release their debut single, Sound of the Underground, which went on to beat the boys, and become the Christmas number 1 for 2002, and making the band become the first girl band to reach number 1 with their debut single. The single, as of February 2009, has sold over 600,000 copies in the UK alone.
In the months to follow, Nicola and the girls went on to knotch up several more top 5 singles, including the anthem, Love Machine, which helped secure the girls a Brit Award nomination, and a ‘Record of the Year’ nomination.
However, in these months Nicola’s appearance dramatically changed from the pale skin, red hair she once was. She was now a tanned brunette, almost looking identically to her other 4 band members. Looking back on her “new” look, Nicola admits that she regrets trying to ‘fit’ in with the other 4 and what she thought was right for the public.
Girls Aloud continued to have various forms of success, with them producing more top 10 singles, and also performing across the nation on two massive tours, however it was in 2006 when Nicola started to turn heads, after being selected as one of the sexiest singers in the world (she came in at 15), beating the likes of Hilary Duff and Jamelia. 2006 also saw Girls Aloud go on to secure their first number 1 album for, The Sound of Girls Aloud, which has now sold over 1 million copies worldwide.
Heartache also shook Nicola, when she and long term boyfriend, Carl, decided to split due to busy lifestyles and the lack of communication happening between the two of them. However, soon Nicola found yet more love in the form of another Carl, and the pair soon started dating in early 2007.
Girls Aloud then went on to get more hits, including their signature track, Call The Shots, which has sold over 250,000 copies, aswell as two more tours, including the sell out tour, The Tangled Up Tour 2008.
Nicola soon had to help close friend, and fellow Girls Aloud member, Cheryl, after her marriage looked set to end in divorce after Cole’s husband cheated on the pop princess. Nicola, Cheryl, and Kimberley jetted off to various places on a girly holiday before they jetted back to the UK for the Brit Awards 2008, where the band were nominated for Best British Group.
In 2008, Nicola launched her own cosemtic range called, Dainty Doll. The range, which was dedicated to woman of pale skin, became an instant success, selling out in the first 3 months of being on sale and making Nicola become the 2nd richest member of Girls Aloud, behind Cheryl Cole who had landed various roles, including becoming a judge on The X Factor.
In 2008-2009 Girls Aloud went on to secure two more top 10 singles, including a number 1 with, The Promise, and a number 1 album, Out of Control. They also sold out a UK tour, and recieved two Brit Awards.
In the summer of 2009, Nicola and the rest of Girls Aloud released their 21st single, Untouchable, and kicked off their latest sold out arena tour, The Out of Control Tour, performing songs from past albums, their latest album, and all their anthem singles.
Nicola looks set to release her makeup range, Dainty Doll, into various stores this year, making it look set to become one of the big sellers for 2009.
Nicola is currently in a relationship, and still a member of Girls Aloud. |
