Nicola gets behind Barnardo’s Fostering & Adoption Week Campaign

Girls Aloud’s Nicola Roberts has thrown her weight behind a Barnardo’s campaign to place more homeless children with foster parents.

As part of the charity’s Fostering & Adoption Week, the singer has called for more people to help older children without families who are normally less likely to be adopted.

Nicola – who became an ambassador for the children’s charity last year – has spoken of the shortage of carers for those between the ages of 10 and 18 in an exclusive blog for us.

“When people think about children in care they generally think of babies and toddlers,” she said.

“But what many of us forget is that children can be in care up to the age of 18. And what many people also may not know is that there is a real shortage of carers for older children.”

Barnardo’s are hoping to find 9,000 new foster families over the next year and Nicola says she has been left heartbroken hearing the situations some of the children find themselves in.

“I often leave my Barnardo’s visits shaking my head because no young person should have to deal with what these kids deal with. It breaks my heart when I hear their stories.”

To find out more about Fostering & Adoption week or if you are interested in taking in a child, call 08000 277 280 or you go to the Barnardo’s website.

Nicola Roberts fronts Alder Hey’s Clothes Throw

Nicola Roberts is the face of this years Alder Hey’s Clothes Throw campaign.

The fundraiser sees supporters throw clothes swap parties to raise funds for the West Derby hospital’s charity the Imagine Appeal.

Nicola said: “I am really excited to be fronting the Clothes Throw 2011 campaign.

“There are three ways you can help with the Alder Hey Clothes Throw – donate clothes, hold your own Clothes Throw party or attend any of the official Clothes Throw events in Liverpool ONE.

“Everyone can help by finding something in their wardrobe they no longer wear and donate it. I’m an avid supporter of the Alder Hey Imagine Appeal. I visit Alder Hey and the patients there really touch my heart.”

An official week of Clothes Throw events kicks off in October at Liverpool ONE’s Palm Sugar bar. There will also be a pop-up Clothes Throw shop in a secret Liverpool ONE location.

The week boasts a series of glitzy catwalk shows, fashion workshops and gives supporters the chance to buy some amazing clothes.

Senior fundraising manager for Alder Hey Imagine Appeal Chris Done said: “To have the support of Nicola Roberts and Liverpool ONE is amazing for us.

“They are the perfect partners to help us expand the Clothes Throw. Alder Hey is the first choice provider of care for more than 80% of the UK’s healthcare commissioners and we are responsible for the health of more children than any other UK hospital.

“We hope the whole of the UK will get behind us and we’d love to see Clothes Throw parties popping up all over the country. Every pound and penny raised from the event will go directly to the Alder Hey Imagine Appeal.”

Go to www.theclothesthrow.com or visit the Liverpool ONE information centre.

Nicola, who’s been abused in the past for her ginger hair and fair skin, said: “I think that the photographs will really help thousands of young people in the UK that are being bullied.”
