Nicola Roberts: Girls Aloud Hiatus Made Me Angry
Girls Aloud star Nicola Roberts has said she struggled to cope with the band’s decision to go on hiatus.
The five-piece, who also feature Nadine Coyle, Cheryl Cole, Sarah Harding and Kimberley Walsh, announced a temporary separation in 2009 and are thought to be reuniting this year to mark their tenth anniversary.
Roberts has told Contact Music that making a solo album helped her get back to music.
She said: “Before I started making the album, I felt so frustrated that I wasn’t making music and I felt like I couldn’t see music in my life for a long time. I didn’t know how I was going to have music in my life until the band had another record.
“It really made me sad. I felt like I wanted to be a singer and I used to write little and then all of a sudden the band went on a break and management were trying to find different things for me to do, this TV work, that TV work, and it was just like, ‘This is really sad, actually.’ Really not sitting well with me at all.”
She continued: “I was frustrated and angry inside every day. That’s what the song ‘Fish Out of Water’ [from album Cinderella's Eyes] was about, what, am I supposed to just find another career because the band is on a break? That’s how I felt.”
Coyle has moved to the USA since the girls put the band on hold, whilst Harding has had low-key acting and presenting success, Walsh has joined the West End production of ‘Shrek: The Musical’ and Cole has achieved a significantly boosted profile through a judging gig on The X Factor and a successful solo career.
Nicola Roberts: ‘I’m adjusting to performing without Girls Aloud’
Nicola Roberts has said that she is still adjusting to performing as a solo artist.
The 26-year-old launched her solo career earlier this year with the release of her album Cinderella’s Eyes.
Speaking at an intimate gig for Carphone Warehouse last night, Roberts said that she still gets nervous singing without her four bandmates, but admitted that she would like to tour.
“I mean if the opportunity was there, I’d love to – I’d definitely love to,” she said. “I do get nervous, I’m not going to lie. I get a lot more nervous on my own than when I was with the band. I am adjusting to it – but it’s very different.
“Sort of being in the studio, writing, recording is also very different to being on your own having to perform the song. It’s two totally different elements. Someone said something really interesting to me the other day; what happens to me, because I wrote it, is that I have a tendency to go into myself and it’s like self-indulgent. But I’m not recording it, I’m performing it – I have to learn to do that just as well.”
Despite the album peaking at number 17 in the UK charts, Roberts admitted that she does view chart success as being equally important as the “unexpected” positive reviews her collection achieved.
“I do follow the charts. I appreciate that I’ve made a record that’s not necessarily what’s in the charts, and I wanted to do that – that’s the record that I wanted to make,” she explained. “I wanted to be able to look back on it and not doing something for any other reason, other than that it was the record that I wanted to make.
“I’ve been given an opportunity to write, and to be in control of it 100%. That is amazing. That’s been the most amazing part and I have that forever – whether or not I make a second record, whatever happens, I have something which I am genuinely proud of.”
Roberts releases third single ‘Yo-Yo’ early next year.
They test Nicola on her Girls Aloud lyrics, and if she can figure out if they are real lyrics or slightly changed to catch her out.
Then Nicola does the ultimate mistake of not being able to recognise a certain hit Girls Aloud song! Oh Nicola, LOL!

Girls are Aloud a night in…!
Nicola and Cheryl both twitpic’d this brilliant picture of all 4 of them together last night.
According to fans who went to the Cinderella’s Eyes album party tonight, all 4 girls were at Kimberley’s house.
Nicola wanted them all to have their picture taken and told them to stand in front of the mirror. Kimberley was shy as she didnt have makeup on and Sarah didnt want to hide behind her phone!
Pillow Magazine got to speak to Nicola last week about London Fashion Week, her boyfriend Charlie, her solo music, and Girls Aloud.
Pillow describes Nicola in the interview as ‘open, warm, honest and passionate’, traits we know and love Nic for.
We got speaking to @PillowMagazine on Twitter and asked a question for Nicola. Unfortunately, it couldn’t be included in the final article. However they did let Nicola know about her fans on Twitter:
@NicolaRobertsUK I didn’t get a chance to ask her your specific q but I told her I’d been tweeting you and that she has a very loyal army of supporters here in tweetland. She said she loved you guys and that it’s amazing to speak directly to her fans here!!x
After the interview went online, i asked why the above Twitter talk didnt get added to the interview. So they gave us an exclusive quote from Nicola, which they didnt include!
“It’s just nice to have a new school of connecting with the people that support you rather than the old school way of never getting round to write back. It’s nice”.
The best part of the interview is when Nicola confirms something is in the pipeline for Girls Aloud next year!
“It’s our tenth anniversary next year, so we’ll be celebrating that together. I can’t really say how… but something, yes,”
Check out the main embedded video of Nicola, Kimberley and Sarah posing for camera’s whilst fans in the background chant ‘Girls Aloud’! Nicola enjoys the chant and puts her arms in the air!

Nicola Roberts has exclusively told MTV UK that she is glad the press got bored of branding her “the ugly one” from Girls Aloud.
Speaking during the shoot of her solo video, Beat Of My Drum, as part of our brand new MTV Music show, On Set With Nicola Roberts, the 25-year old claimed: “I don’t know if people just got bored of the joke or whether those people who said nasty things grew up.”
Roberts continued that she tried to block out their nasty comments, explaining: “It can’t register anymore. There is no room for that, it just brings you down and just turns you into a negative person and makes you doubt yourself. I don’t think that anybody is in a position to make somebody doubt themselves.”
She continued: “We do enough of that on our own, without other people like adding pressure and I just think that people need to chill out. Not everybody is perfect, do your own thing and mind your own bloody business do you know what I mean?”
Nicola also revealed that despite doubting herself in the past, she tried not to feel conscious when shooting her the promo for Beat of My Drum, adding: “Even though you might be like ‘oh my god’ inside, you’ve just got to go for it, otherwise it’s just going to look stupid. You have to be like, I can deal with this.”
