Nicola Roberts: Girls Aloud Hiatus Made Me Angry
Girls Aloud star Nicola Roberts has said she struggled to cope with the band’s decision to go on hiatus.
The five-piece, who also feature Nadine Coyle, Cheryl Cole, Sarah Harding and Kimberley Walsh, announced a temporary separation in 2009 and are thought to be reuniting this year to mark their tenth anniversary.
Roberts has told Contact Music that making a solo album helped her get back to music.
She said: “Before I started making the album, I felt so frustrated that I wasn’t making music and I felt like I couldn’t see music in my life for a long time. I didn’t know how I was going to have music in my life until the band had another record.
“It really made me sad. I felt like I wanted to be a singer and I used to write little and then all of a sudden the band went on a break and management were trying to find different things for me to do, this TV work, that TV work, and it was just like, ‘This is really sad, actually.’ Really not sitting well with me at all.”
She continued: “I was frustrated and angry inside every day. That’s what the song ‘Fish Out of Water’ [from album Cinderella's Eyes] was about, what, am I supposed to just find another career because the band is on a break? That’s how I felt.”
Coyle has moved to the USA since the girls put the band on hold, whilst Harding has had low-key acting and presenting success, Walsh has joined the West End production of ‘Shrek: The Musical’ and Cole has achieved a significantly boosted profile through a judging gig on The X Factor and a successful solo career.

A few days ago we got to see a behind the scenes look at the Yo-Yo video.
We’re now lucky enough to get another sneak preview, which is more in-depth.
Nicola talks about the song in the video: “The general concept is really all about the story and just following the story of the song. It’s a really emotional song… [so] one of the hardest things about today is to take it out of my situation and be able to perform the song through the cameras.”
She added: “I think the song means a lot to a lot of people, so fingers crossed the story really hits home.”
Nicola Roberts: ‘I’m adjusting to performing without Girls Aloud’
Nicola Roberts has said that she is still adjusting to performing as a solo artist.
The 26-year-old launched her solo career earlier this year with the release of her album Cinderella’s Eyes.
Speaking at an intimate gig for Carphone Warehouse last night, Roberts said that she still gets nervous singing without her four bandmates, but admitted that she would like to tour.
“I mean if the opportunity was there, I’d love to – I’d definitely love to,” she said. “I do get nervous, I’m not going to lie. I get a lot more nervous on my own than when I was with the band. I am adjusting to it – but it’s very different.
“Sort of being in the studio, writing, recording is also very different to being on your own having to perform the song. It’s two totally different elements. Someone said something really interesting to me the other day; what happens to me, because I wrote it, is that I have a tendency to go into myself and it’s like self-indulgent. But I’m not recording it, I’m performing it – I have to learn to do that just as well.”
Despite the album peaking at number 17 in the UK charts, Roberts admitted that she does view chart success as being equally important as the “unexpected” positive reviews her collection achieved.
“I do follow the charts. I appreciate that I’ve made a record that’s not necessarily what’s in the charts, and I wanted to do that – that’s the record that I wanted to make,” she explained. “I wanted to be able to look back on it and not doing something for any other reason, other than that it was the record that I wanted to make.
“I’ve been given an opportunity to write, and to be in control of it 100%. That is amazing. That’s been the most amazing part and I have that forever – whether or not I make a second record, whatever happens, I have something which I am genuinely proud of.”
Roberts releases third single ‘Yo-Yo’ early next year.
Here is the artwork for Nicola’s third single ‘Yo-Yo’!
Speaking about the track, Nic explained: “The song is about being in that position with a guy when you really don’t know whether you’re coming or going.”
“Being in that position can make you really vulnerable. It’s the dark, desperate and doubtful side of love.”
The CD single, due for release on 2 January, will feature a live rendition of the track, as well as a demo version of Sticks + Stones.

Cheryl shocked by Nicola’s solo album
Nicola Roberts thinks her solo album surprised her Girls Aloud bandmates, with Cheryl Cole expressing her shock at some of the tracks.
The Girls Aloud star recently released her debut record ‘Cinderella’s Eyes’ and bandmate Cheryl wasn’t expecting to be so emotionally affected by the music.
Nicola said: “The other girls love it. I think they’ve been a little bit surprised by the music. Cheryl told me, ‘I laughed, I cried, I was shocked, I was this, I was that, I was every emotion listening to the album.’ That’s what I wanted, for people to be able to relate to it.”
Nicola admitted she was surprised by the public reaction as she didn’t know what to expect.
She said: “It’s been amazing, just unbelievable, especially after working so long on something so personal.
“I didn’t build myself up for anything. I’ve always loved to write and I really wanted to get into the studio to learn and just get better at it. I suppose I wanted to become a little bit more legit in what I said I did for a living.”
The album charts are very competative at the moment with the likes of Adele, Nirvana, Bruno Mars, Amy Winehouse and Rihanna to name just a few, thats been dominating the charts for weeks.
Nicola’s debut album Cinderella’s Eyes has managed to slip in and chart in its first week at #17!
Well done Team Ginge! I know many of you, including ourselves bought mulitiple copies to get it signed ect.
Cinderella’s Eyes has become one of the most anticipated releases of the year, an incredible mix of colossal pop melodies, underground sounds, singing, rapping and astonishing honesty – and the great news is that it’s out now!
Nicola said: “I’ve been given an opportunity to make the album I want to make, so I’ve absolutely put every last bit of heart and soul into it.”
For anyone who pre-ordered Cinderella’s Eyes on iTunes, please be aware that there are some technical issues which means you won’t be able to redeem the album today. This is being corrected and should all be back to normal for this evening when you should be able to redeem your album.
