VIDEO: Nicola Roberts talks ‘sticks + stones’ on BBC Breakfast
Nicola went on BBC breakfast this morning and talked about her amazing song on ‘Cinderella’s Eyes’ album sticks + stones(Listen here if you’ve not heard it yet!)
This song gives me absolute goosebumps everytime i hear it so to see it being played on the BBC for the first time is amazing. Hope Nicola is gaining more fans day by day.
Nicola Roberts: Up for the fight [The Sunday Times]
Once seen as the shy ugly duckling of Girls Aloud, Nicola Roberts is asserting her true self on a magnificently bonkers solo album
At a music awards show early in 2009, two members of Girls Aloud sat at a prominently placed table. One of them was visibly wired, loudly rejecting the food and drink on offer, and sending her publicist out for a bag of chips and a bottle of vodka. Later, as the dancing began, Sarah Harding would hurl herself around with the same mad abandon as Grace Jones, who was gyrating wildly atop an adjoining table. It was the demeanour of the woman accompanying Harding that was far more intriguing. Initially, Nicola Roberts’s expression seemed to communicate the same reserve the bitchier sections of the press had long ago misinterpreted, possibly wilfully, as arrogance, as surliness. Yet closer inspection suggested something more complicated: Roberts, far from coming across as timid, appeared watchful, observing events and the behaviour of those around her with a weather eye.
When you consider that many of those same writers had for years, with a gleeful, careless cruelty, been labelling the singer as the ugly duckling of Girls Aloud, poking fun at her pale skin and ginger hair, that air of detachment is unsurprising. Which of us wouldn’t keep our distance, faced with such hostility? Roberts herself views her behaviour as entirely understandable, for all that it cost her dear. “I’ve never been the kind of person that is, like, ‘Look at me’,” she says when we discuss that night. “All eyes don’t have to be on me. But I do observe a lot — that’s just the way I am. That’s not me saying, ‘I’m shy, so I’m going to be an observer.’ I just find it weird, not so much now, but definitely early on, to have to strike up a conversation with someone I didn’t know.”
The heartening news is that, two and a half years on from that awards show, Roberts is no longer prepared to play the role of shy retirer. No wonder, as she has much to shout about. Her imminent debut album, Cinderella’s Eyes, is a riot of point-scoring lyrics and unfettered, giddy-making bonkers pop, on which the 25-year-old channels her inner Kate Bush and Cilla, working with some of the genre’s most inventive songwriters and producers (and co-writing 11 of the 12 tracks). The first single, June’s Beat of My Drum, was one of the most eccentric pop songs to have graced the charts in years; its successor, Lucky Day, is no shrinking violet. No wonder Roberts looks so up for it today, sitting in a London restaurant (and, significantly, attracting no looks of recognition whatsoever).
NICOLA Roberts’ decision to work with the Mercury-nominated indie act Metronomy on her debut solo album Cinderella’s Eyes has paid off.
The track I is great dark pop, a bit like Goldfrapp and Kylie’s Nineties rock phase.
Her self-penned lyrics also mark her out as the troublemaker in Girls Aloud.
On I, she sings: “I don’t like that you won’t let me speak controversially/ Because you think it won’t sit well universally.”
Later she raps, blasting her critics: “Called me a rude ginger b****/ They’re gonna eat all their words.”
More convincing than Cher Lloyd.
On Fish Out Of Water, Yo-Yo and Sticks ‘N’ Stones Nicola, pictured above in Notion mag, talks in brutally honest detail about her ex-loves and confidence issues.

Nicola Roberts joins Sainsbury’s Super Saturday gig line up
Top pop acts join existing line-up for the event that marks one year to go until the London 2012 Paralympic Games
Sainsbury’s today announced the addition of four more top pop acts to the line up for Sainsbury’s Super Saturday – the family event taking place on Clapham Common on the 10 September in support of the London 2012 Paralympic Games.
Pixie Lott, Sugababes, Nicola Roberts and Olly Murs will be joining a hugely popular line up that already features Taio Cruz, The Saturdays and Chipmunk, for the event that marks one year to go until the Paralympic Games and is set to be the ultimate family day out.
Those attending the day-long festival will be able to get into the spirit of things by not only viewing Paralympic sport demonstrations but also trying their hand at select sports on site. Coached by some of the inspiring Team GB Paralympic athletes, such as wheelchair tennis star Louise Hunt and double Paralympic gold medal-winning swimmer Ellie Simmonds, revellers can try their hand at Goal Ball, wheelchair tennis and wheelchair basketball – with more sports to be announced.
Other fun-filled family activities available on the day include face painting, Zorbing, a bouncy castle, bungee trampolines and an inflatable obstacle course – all included as part of the ticket price.
Sainsbury’s want as many people as possible to be able to come down and enjoy the day and has reduced ticket prices as follows – £30 for adults, £20 for children, under 5s go free and a family ticket is available for £90 (covering 2 adults and 2 children).
I just love these pictures! Nicola is seen filming her second music video ‘Lucky Day’ in New York over the weekend. She looks so happy and is having a lot of fun. Can’t wait to see the video!
