Sunbed ban backed by Nicola to become law

A NEW law banning under-18s from tanning salons is set to come into force — after being cleared by the Lords today.

The Sunbeds (Regulation) Bill aims to combat the increase in skin cancer among young women.

It follows a Sun campaign to ban unmanned automatic sun beds, backed by Girls Aloud star Nicola Roberts and Hollyoaks actress Gemma Merna.

The Bill, which has cross-party support, was launched in January.

It places a duty on salon operators in England and Wales to prevent the use of sunbeds by under-18s and gives local authority officers increased powers to inspect the businesses and to penalise owners who breach the ban.

It will stop children hiring or buying sunbeds and outlaw automatic tanning salons.

Clear health information would also be required in salons, setting out the dangers of sunbed use.

A similar ban already applies in Scotland, and ministers in Northern Ireland have said they plan to bring forward legislation on sunbeds as soon as possible.

The Bill, which had already cleared the Commons, has now been sent for Royal Assent.

Nicole Roberts: Is this sexy? No, no, no

Convinced she was ugly, Girls Aloud singer Nicola Roberts used fake tan. Now she’s getting vocal on the danger of sunbeds

Nicola Roberts always felt like the ugly one in Girls Aloud. Partly it was her age – when the group was formed by a reality TV show in 2002, she was only 16 and struggling with the normal insecurities of any teenage girl. Overnight, the red-haired girl from Runcorn was catapulted into the public eye and posing for photo-shoots alongside four preternaturally gorgeous band-mates, including Cheryl Cole. But mostly, Roberts says, she felt ugly because of her pale skin.

“I used to do fake tanning because I was told that I didn’t look great,” she explains. “Being brown is something that people find attractive so I thought at least I could make that piece of the jigsaw fit. The newspapers would always refer to the other girls like ’stunning Sarah [Harding]‘ and I never had that prefix. I wanted that, at 16.”

Why Nicola Roberts is anti-sunbeds

YOUNGSTERS are risking their health by using sunbeds up to twice a DAY, says Girls Aloud star Nicola Roberts.

The pale beauty, now filming a BBC3 documentary called The Truth About Tanning, says teens are in the grips of a deadly epidemic in their bid to be bronzed.

MPs will soon vote to outlaw unsupervised booths, and yesterday MP Julie Morgan launched a Private Member’s Bill to ban salon sunbeds for under 18s. Health Secretary Andy Burnham gave the Government’s backing.

It follows a Sun campaign – backed by cancer charities and MPs Sian James and Julie Morgan – to ban unsupervised booths.

Nicola, 24, backs tighter rules on sunbeds.

Here she tells why.

Nicola Roberts backs the sunbed ban for under-18s

nicola roberts

Celebrities are joining the Health Secretary in support of a call to ban under 18s using sunbeds in tanning salons.

Girls Aloud singer Nicola Roberts is due to speak alongside Andy Burnham at the launch of a Private Member’s Bill introduced by Cardiff North MP Julie Morgan.

Ms Morgan says she is “absolutely delighted” Mr Burnham is backing her bill which also wants to see an end to unmanned tanning salons.

“It’s a Bill that’s urgently needed. If you get backing from the Secretary of State there’s that much more chance we’ll get it through,” she explained.

Pop singer Roberts, who is known for her porcelain complexion, is making a documentary about the dangers of the tanning industry. She says she has learned to love her pale skin after years of using fake tan to match her bronzed bandmates.

A study last year discovered around 250,000 11-to-17-year-olds in England were risking skin cancer by using sunbeds.

Mr Burnham said: “The scientific evidence is clear – sunbeds increase your risk of getting skin cancer. It is far too easy for young people to use sunbeds and I am determined to take action to protect them.
I fully support this Bill which will force tanning salons to ban access for people under 18 years old.”

The Bill, which will have its second reading in the House of Commons on January 29, will be launched by Ms Morgan and charity Cancer Research UK.

Nicola’s new documentary for the BBC

nicola roberts bbc3

Nicola recently filmed a brand new documentary for BBC3 all about the dangers of fake-tanning and sun beds. From being a big fan of fake tanning herself, Nicola has grown to embrace her natural complexion.

She says, ‘The subject of tanning is something that I am very passionate about. I was once in a place where, as stupid as it sounds, if I had a tan I felt like I fitted in just a bit more. I want to delve deeper and ask why people do it and show the extreme and sometimes fatal lengths people will go to.’

Nicola will meet young women whose love of tanning is an addiction, who use sunbeds 4-5 times a week. She’ll meet girls in their early teens who, like her when she was young, experience the pressures from their peers to conform and be tanned.

She will also reveal how she has overcome her early reliance on fake tan and her gradual sense of confidence in her own skin.

As part of the show Nicola will be meeting the top dermatologists and cancer experts who will reveal the risks tan addicts are exposing themselves to. Nicola’s journey will take her into the hospital wards where some of the estimated 120 under 40s who die from skin cancer each year are treated. Skin cancer is the most common cancer in under 35s in the UK.
